During breast enlargement surgery, augmentation mammoplasty, the surgeon will place an implant, made of soft silicone and usually filled with silicone gel or a saline solution, underneath the breast tissue. These implants used to be expected to last for up to ten years but the most modern ones have a far longer period of use. Before going ahead with breast augmentation, a potential patient will need to have a comprehensive discussion with the specialist carrying out the procedure.

You will need to discuss what improvements you can legitimately expect from the operation, all the pre and post operative requirements and any possible side effects or complications that could occur. If you anticipate breastfeeding in the future, inform your surgeon as this might influence the kind of surgery he performs.

If you have only recently stopped breastfeeding, it is best to wait until your breast size has returned to normal before any augmentation. Breast augmentation surgery will usually increase your breast size by one to three bra cup sizes but discuss this with your specialist, and also decide if you would like to have a breast lift, mastopexy, at the same time.

The operation itself, which usually lasts between one and two hours, is carried out under a general anesthetic and will entail a short stay in the hospital or clinic, often requiring an overnight stay. An incision will be made in the bottom crease of the breast, the armpit or perhaps along the areola. The implant is then inserted through the pocket created by the incision. After carefully placing the implant – either under the breast tissue or the chest muscle under the breast – it is then adjusted to its correct position. The incision is then closed with sutures.

Immediately after the surgery, the breasts are wrapped in an elastic bandage and supported by a special bra. You are likely to experience bruising, swelling and tenderness in the breasts for several days and, initially, may need to take pain relief tablets. A burning sensation in the nipples is not unusual for a little while. It will be necessary to wear a support bra constantly for a while, to help support the breasts whilst they are healing and, additionally, because this can help reduce the swelling.

Most women can reasonably expect to return to normal work after about a week but will have to wait until the surgeon gives the go ahead before resuming more strenuous exercise. Heavy lifting certainly needs to be avoided until a full recovery has been made. There are scars as a result of breast enlargement surgery but they are generally in areas that are hidden or blend in to the lines of the skin. Most scars will fade significantly over time.

All surgery carries with it risks, in addition to benefits. Generally speaking, breast enlargement surgery is a safe and successful procedure but there are some infrequent instances of infection, hematoma, abnormal scarring, the loss of feeling in the nipples, changes within the implant or rippling in the breast’s skin caused by capsular contracture.
When you have mammograms in the future, inform your radiographer so that measures can be adopted that will counteract any interference.
Most clinics in the USA charge around $6,000 for surgeon’s fees for breast enlargements: In Britain, you can anticipate a cost of between £4,000 and £7,500.
