Breast reduction surgery is a way that breasts can be surgically reshaped, by removing excess tissue and skin and repositioning the nipples.
Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) can also help alleviate physical discomfort brought about by large breasts, including pains in the neck, back and shoulders or excessive sweating and skin rashes.
When you are contemplating any cosmetic surgery, you need to make yourself as well informed as possible. Carry out the necessary background research to make sure that you are entrusting your surgery to a totally reliable practitioner and that, at your preliminary consultations, you are given all the relevant medical information and details about after care. The actual operation itself is performed under a general anesthetic, taking between two and four hours.
The most common procedure followed involves the surgeon making an incision around the areola and down in a vertical line beneath the breast. The excess breast tissue, fat and skin are then carefully removed and the nipples and remaining tissues moved to a new, higher location. The new contour of the breast is then shaped by bringing the skin from both sides of the breast down and around the areola. The breasts will be wrapped in a specially designed dressing or support bra, which will have to be worn for up to two weeks, until all the swelling and bruising have subsided. Most of the sutures will dissolve but those that do not will be taken out at the end of the first week. It might be that thin plastic tubes are left in each breast during the first few days, in order to help drain fluids.
Once you are home, you can take regular painkillers if necessary but you must make sure you follow the instructions given by the clinic meticulously. You will, for example, need to wear a support bra for several weeks to prevent the weight of the breasts pulling on your wounds. You will have to be careful lifting – especially children – for the same reason.
You will experience pain, swelling, bruising and tenderness for some days after breast reduction surgery. In addition, changes in sensation are not uncommon. Your scars, quite noticeable at first, will fade significantly over time.
Specific complications of breast reduction surgery are very unusual but they could include inflection, bleeding, heavy scarring, the loss of a nipple because of alterations in the blood supply, or uneven shaped breasts. Most patients, though, are completely satisfied with their surgery: they have smaller, lighter, firmer breasts and are given a new found confidence because of this.
Breast reduction surgery is no longer just an option for women, of course. Some men with large breasts can have a gynaecomastia, male breast reduction surgery. These are carried out in order to flatten the breast area. The surgical procedure for men is identical to that of women but, because the reconstruction process is more straightforward, the operation only takes one hour.
The average total cost for breast reduction surgery in the USA amounts to a total of about $5,200. In Britain, the prices vary from between £3,700 and £5,500.

Having overly large breasts can sometimes dominate a woman’s appearance, making her look, and feel, unbalanced and have a significant impact on her self-esteem.
