They can dramatically improve the appearance of the lower leg, and sometimes, as a consequence, the whole of the body. Calf implants are often chosen by patients to correct specific physical defects.
The calf implant procedure is performed under a general anesthetic and usually can be completed in about an hour on the operating table. The operation involves a small incision being cut into the natural crease behind the patient’s knee. A ‘pocket’ is then created, into which the silicon implant can be maneuvered into position – on either the upper inside or the outside of the leg. Because of the muscle and fat to be found in the area, a scar tissue will be formed which will help maintain the implant in its position. Over a period of time, the implant will become an integral part of the muscle structure of the leg.
Although a bandage will be applied in order to minimize swelling, a certain amount of bruising and discomfort is to be expected although, with the help of a carefully structured recovery program, reasonably normal activities will be possible within a few days of the operation. Extremely vigorous physical pursuits, however, will need to be avoided for perhaps as long as six months, or ‘shifting’ might occur.
It is quite common for patients who are having calf augmentation treatment to have ankle or leg liposuction simultaneously, to create a completely thinner, better defined leg.
Because calf implant surgery is a bona fide surgical procedure, there is an inherent risk involved. However, these risks are minimal provided that the patient is in good overall health. There is, however, always a slight risk of infection or of an adverse reaction to the general anesthetic. More specific side effects or complications of the calf augmentation procedure itself, though, are very unusual. There could be excessive bleeding or movement of the implant, which would involve further treatment, but the vast majority of people who have undergone calf implants claim that they have a greatly increased feeling of self-confidence. Many state that, for the first time in many years, they are confident enough to be seen wearing shorts or swimming costumes, with no sense of embarrassment.
If you are a person who feels unhappy with the size or muscle definition of your legs, then calf transplants might be the answer. Find a well-qualified and experience practitioner and arrange a preliminary consultation in which you can ask all of the questions you need about the process and show the surgeon that you are fully aware of the decisions you are making.
In the USA the price of calf implants ranges from about $6,500 to $8,500, although this will vary somewhat between regions and be dependent upon the surgeon or clinic you select. In Britain, you should expect to pay in the region of £3,000 to £4,500.
Calf Implants
For people with underdeveloped calf muscles, calf implants can enable the legs to appear much fuller, much more muscular and generally better defined.
