– by firming up and smoothing our eyelids and removing the bags.
Eye lid surgery, often known as an eye lid lift, has become the most popular form of cosmetic facial surgery in both the USA and Britain. If, however, you are suffering from glaucoma or excessively dry eyes, you might not be considered suitable for the treatment.
It is important to make the correct decisions when contemplating eye lid surgery – like all cosmetic work, it is not something to be hurried into. Take your time selecting the most appropriate clinic for your specific needs and make sure that, at the first consultation prior to the procedure, you are able to leave with all of your questions fully answered. Cosmetic surgery to the eye lids is commonly performed and considered to be very safe. Still ensure, though, that you become totally familiar with any possible side effects or complications that could arise – however remote the possibility.
This type of surgery can be carried out using a local or a general anesthetic; this should be discussed at your preliminary consultation. For surgery on the upper lid, a small incision will be made in the natural crease of the eye, meaning any scar can be hidden. Any drooping skin, excess muscle and fat can then be removed from the eye and the lid lifted and tightened. If the surgery is simply on the lower eye lid, the incision is made just below the lashes.
Most patients are able to return to their home on the actual day of the operation, although you will need someone to drive you. It is also advisable that there is someone with you during your first night. You may well be given some treatment for your eye to prevent it from drying out. If you need to take them, over the counter painkillers will also be permissible.
You are likely to have some tape over your eyelids for a little while and will undoubtedly suffer from some bruising, soreness and swelling. A cold compress will often help the swelling go down and most patients fully recover within two or three weeks. During the first period after surgery, you are advised to have your head propped upright when you are in bed, to help reduce the swelling. Also, you should avoid wearing eye make-up until you are given the go ahead by your consultant, you should not wear contact lenses for at least two weeks and not drive until you are completely certain that your vision has returned to normal and your eyes no longer water. If you should develop tiny white spots near your stitches, as happens occasionally, these should be removed professionally with a needle – don’t try it yourself!
Eye lid surgery is, in the vast majority of instances, a problem-free procedure, which makes a big difference to the lives of people who have developed ‘ageing eyes’.
The full effects might not show for three weeks or so, but most people consider it all thoroughly worthwhile.
In Britain, expect to pay about £2,000 for upper eye lid surgery, £2,500 for the lower lid and somewhere between £3,000 and £4,500 for both lids. In the USA, the average cost for both eye lids starts at around $4,000.

As we grow older, our skin becomes thinner and less elastic. As a consequence, we often develop drooping eye lids or bags underneath our eyes. Eye lid surgery, medically referred to as blepharoplasty, can take away the sagging skin, muscle and excess fat and make us look younger
