Simply put, facial implants are employed to help improve and enhance a patient’s facial contours. During a facelift, perhaps, a person might choose to have cheek implants to help bring about the younger look. Implants can be used to ‘fill out’ a face that looks sunken and tired. Undoubtedly, skillfully inserted facial implants can give a real boost to someone’s self esteem by making a real difference to their appearance, changing the basic shape and balance of the face.
Take time to consider exactly what you are looking for with your facial implant surgery and then arrange a consultation with a suitably qualified surgeon. At your pre-surgical consultation, discuss with your doctor the details of the procedure, your pre and post op routines and, of course, the costs involved. This type of cosmetic surgery is usually conducted as a day patient – only very occasionally will a patient need to stay overnight.
The length of the operation obviously depends on the nature of the treatment but it is normally between 30 minutes and two hours. Commonly, a local anesthetic, combined with a sedative, is sufficient although occasionally a general anesthesia might be considered more appropriate.
Whatever type of facial implant is being inserted will require one or two small incisions into the skin. In this way, a pocket is formed into which the, usually, silicone implant can fit. In many cases, dissolving sutures can be used, otherwise the sutures will be left in for anything up to a week.
You can expect to experience some discomfort and swelling in the area around your treated area for several days and you will be given dietary and hygiene instructions. It might be necessary to take mild painkillers for a while. You can realistically expect to return to work one week after the procedure. Within between two and four weeks, your new look should be completely visible because all the swelling will have disappeared. Because of the risks involved in bumping or jarring the face, however, you would be best advised not to participate in certain strenuous physical activities for about six weeks – but this is something you might want to discuss with your surgeon.
As with any surgical procedure, there is always a slight risk of an infection around the facial implant. The most common risk otherwise associated with this surgery, however, is the shifting of the implant so that it becomes out of alignment. In these very rare cases a second operation, to reposition the implant, might be needed.
In the United Kingdom, the anticipated price for facial surgery will usually be between £2,150 and £3,600 – depending on the nature of the surgery. In the USA you can expect to pay anything up to $2,000 for a single implant. If you are having other cosmetic surgery at the same time, however, many clinics will reflect this in their prices.
The face is our primary means of communicating with others and if our face looks tired, sad and fading, then facial implants can help make us look and feel more confident, happier, healthier and younger.
