Others might experience pain whilst cycling, horse riding, walking or have a constant irritation if wearing tight trousers or underwear. For some women this might be a genetic feature or it could perhaps be a condition that developed with childbirth.

Whatever the reasons, this is a part of cosmetic surgery which has increased in popularity considerably during the last few years.
If you have been contemplating labia reduction surgery, known properly as labiaplasty, then ensure that you find a surgeon who specializes in this field and in whom you can place your complete confidence. At the preliminary consultation, ask all the questions that are necessary regarding pre and post-operative care, the possible side effects of the surgery and what you expect to achieve from it.

Your surgeon will need your complete medical history and need to be reassured that your expectations are realistic and achievable: it is important to realize that the labia minora have the important function of protecting the vaginal orifice and consequently must not be over-reduced.
Labia reduction surgery normally takes about an hour to complete, usually under a general anesthetic.

During the procedure, the surgeon will remove the excess skin from the labia minora, making it appear less large and asymmetrical, whilst avoiding interference with the clitoris or urethral opening. Any scarring will be minimal and only visible to the highly-trained eye. Increasingly, laser surgery is being used for this type of cosmetic surgery, to minimize scarring even more.

After surgery, you will probably experience some mild discomfort and swelling and may well be allowed home the same day. You will be given an after surgery routine to follow to minimize any risk of infection or damage to the wound and the area around the wound will be dressed with a pad similar to those worn during menstruation.

A degree of bed rest is advisable, with perhaps applications of ice to help the alleviate the swelling but you can hopefully resume work in about a week and be feeling more or less ‘back to normal’ within one or two weeks more. Sexual activity needs to be avoided for between six and eight weeks and you will be unable to use a tampon for about two weeks.
Apart from the anticipated post-surgical discomfort, which can be alleviated by painkillers if necessary, most patients experience few if any side effects from labia reduction surgery.

As with any operation, there will always be slight risks associated with infection, reaction to the anesthetic and bleeding but these occur in very few cases. Side effects specific to this procedure are also uncommon but include loss of sensitivity in the labia and accidental damage to the clitoris or urethral opening.

Most women who have been through this process, however, report that they feel much more confident in intimate situations and much happier with the way they subsequently look. Labia reduction surgery costs about £2,550 in Britain and usually between $4,500 and $5,000 in the USA. It is sometimes carried out at the same time as vaginal tightening surgery.
