Many attempts have been made to help sufferers overcome this problem by using creams, waxes and electrolysis methods but none have proved satisfactory. Laser hair removal treatment has been clinically proven to be an effective, quick and painless method. More importantly, it has also been shown to be the one hair removal treatment to achieve long-lasting results.

Laser hair removal treatment entails aiming a laser at hair follicles in order to prevent new growth from occurring. The laser can produce a high-intensity ray of light, which emits heat energy. This is then absorbed by different body tissues. Because laser light can pass safely through the skin without damaging anything other than the targeted hair follicles, this is a perfectly safe procedure. The heat energy from the laser attacks the cells at the base of each hair follicle, and so prevents it from growing.

Women have traditionally been the predominant users of hair removal treatments, specifically when attempting to remove superfluous hair on the face, the neck, the arms and legs, under the arms, around the nipples and the bikini and tummy lines. More recently, however, increasing numbers of men have started to use laser hair removal treatments – probably because it is less painful than waxing! Common areas for men to have treated are the face, neck, ears, chest and back.
Laser hair removal treatment is most effective on hairs that are just beginning to grow. As each hair will have its own growth cycle, this means that a patient will require several treatments on an identified area for it to be completely successful. It is reckoned that the majority of people will require three sessions for the optimum effect.

Because this is a specialist cosmetic procedure, you should ensure that you consult a fully qualified medical professional or beautician and discuss your proposed treatment with them. Each session of treatment will last between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the size of the area being targeted. Although the treatment is perfectly safe, you might need to wear special goggles to protect your eyes. You could also be given a cooling gel or an anesthetic cream if an ultra-sensitive part of the body is being treated. The treatment itself is quite painless – especially so to those used to waxing – with patients usually reporting that they experienced slight tingling during it. The light produced by lasers is not cancer forming and is not in any way a similar treatment to X-rays or radiotherapy.

There are also few, if any, side effects for the majority of people. Any redness or swelling at the site will subside after just a few hours. People with dark skin, or a heavy sun tan, will have additional melanin in their hair as well as their skin. As melanin is known to absorb much of the laser light, results are not as good as they are on lighter-skinned patients. Also, lasers do not work as effectively on people with ginger hair, for the same reason. In such cases, careful consultation with the specialist is needed before embarking on any treatment.

If you wax, pluck or bleach your hair, the hair follicle is undamaged, so it will quickly regrow. Electrolysis, which does damage the follicle, can only treat one hair at a time and can cause scarring. Laser hair removal treatment is far more effective than any of the other methods. No hair removal treatment can be permanent, so periodic visits for additional treatment will be needed. However, laser hair removal has a far higher degree of patient satisfaction than any other method.

The typical cost of each session of laser hair removal will be between $50 and $600US or £40 to £350 in Britain. It is difficult to be more specific because of the wide variety of work that can be undertaken and the sizes of the areas treated.

For many people, excessive hair on the face or the body is an unsightly, embarrassing problem. Not only is this hair difficult to remove, it also grows back again disturbingly quickly.
