It was at the end of the 1980s that surgery for more cosmetic reasons began to be more commonplace. There are basically two penis enlargement treatments – to increase penis length, known as enlargement phalloplasty, and to increase width, known as girth enlargement. Each of these procedures is a surgical operation and it is possible to have them performed simultaneously. Penis lengthening can usually take about one hour, whilst girth enlargement is more likely to take two hours.
It is usual for the procedures to be performed under general anesthetic It is quite common, especially for girth enlargement, for a patient to be circumcised during the operation. Well over 10,000 men have been estimated to have had male penis enlargement surgery in the USA alone, but, at present, there have been no reliable publications about results and complications.. This means that there is no reliable data to enable us to examine long-term effects of the operations and we are reliant on the statistics produced by the operating clinics themselves.
The most common surgical technique used in enlargement phallopasty is the cutting of the suspensory ligament – that attaches the penis to the body- with plastic surgery then providing extra skin to cover the new length of the penis. This can result in a lengthening of the penis of up to 2 inches for some men. However, because the suspensory ligament no longer provides support for the erect penis, some men discover that their erect penis now points downwards as a result of the operation.
There are two commonly used techniques for increasing penile girth. The first of these methods involves injecting liposuctioned fat, usually taken from the abdominal wall or thighs, under the skin of the penis. The second method entails placing grafts of the patient’s dermis and fat – usually from the groin or buttock area – inside the penile shaft. More recently, the introduction of Alloderm™ grafts, injected in sheets, is claimed to have advanced the procedure considerably. Not only does this result in a typical gain of about 30% in circumference but it is reported that the penis will have a more natural feel and a smoother appearance.
You would probably need to take a week off work after your penis enlargement surgery and rest as much as possible. During the healing process, hygiene will be of the utmost importance. Any non-dissolvable sutures will be removed after a week or two. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for about 4 weeks and sexual activity for about 6 weeks.
The most common side effects to both of these enlargement procedures are excessive bleeding and infections but other possible complications include scarring, erectile dysfunctions and decreasing penile sensation.
Male penis enlargement surgery to lengthen the penis will usually cost between $4,500 and $6,000US (£2,500 to £3,000 in the UK); for girth enlargement it is between $3,500 and $5,000 (£1,750 - £2,500). Combining both procedures can be expected to cost between $7,500 and $10,000US or £4,500 to £5,000 in Britain.
