Now that cosmetic surgery procedures are becoming more and more common, it might be the time to take the next step and investigate the procedure fully. The great majority of people who have had nose plastic surgery report that they feel more confident, happier and much less self-conscious as a result of it.
Nose plastic surgery falls into three distinct categories. Rhinotip surgery involves the correction of the tip of the nose and the nostrils. Rhinoplasty is when the bridge of the nose is also included in the surgical procedure. Finally, Septorhinoplasty also entails correction of the internal septum.
Successful nose plastic surgery can change the size of your nose in relation to the rest of your face; the width of the nose; your nose ‘profile’; your nasal tip, which might be too large or unduly upturned; the width of your nostrils; and nasal asymmetry, which makes your whole face appear unbalanced. If you are generally physically healthy and have a clear idea of what kind of outcome you would like to see from the surgery, then find a well-qualified and experienced professional and make a preliminary appointment to discover all of the details about the treatment.
Before undergoing any surgery you will be questioned about your medical history and have a thorough check up – including your heart and lungs. You might be asked to refrain from taking certain medicines immediately before the procedure, especially aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs which can increase bleeding, and you will certainly be advised to stop smoking well in advance of the surgery. Additionally, your face will need to be measured and perhaps photographs taken, as well as having thorough discussions about how you want your ‘new’ nose to look.
Your plastic surgeon will discuss whether the nose plastic surgery will take place as a single day treatment – in which case you will need to arrange for someone to take you home and stay with you for your first night – or if you are going to be in hospital overnight. You will also discuss the alternatives of general anesthetic or intravenous sedation.
The surgery itself will either be carried out using a ‘closed’ procedure, with incisions hidden inside the nose, or as an ‘open’ operation, where the incision is made to the strip of tissue separating the nostrils. The soft tissues will then be gently lifted, allowing the structure of the nose to be altered.
Most commonly, pieces of cartilage from the septum, the ear or the ribcage are used for the process, although additional bone taken from your skull, elbow, hip or rib can also be suitably grafted.
Internal tubes and external splints will give your nose the necessary support for about one week after the nose surgery and you will probably be given painkillers for a few days. You will almost certainly have bruising and swelling around the nose and eyes for about a week. The sutures used in the surgery are invariably dissolvable after around a week.
There are a few possible complications that occasionally occur after nose plastic surgery. Chest infections are common amongst smokers but there is also the possibility of infection, heavy nose bleeding and temporary loss of sensitivity in the nose and the sense of smell.
It has been estimated that about one patient in every ten will need further treatment – because of complications or an unsatisfactory outcome. This does imply, however, that nine out of ten people return to work the following week feeling pleased by their decision to have their nose reshaped in this way.
If you live in the USA the average cost for nose plastic surgery is $3332, obviously depending on the amount of work carried out and the nature of the clinic. In the United Kingdom, expect to pay around about £3,500, although this again can vary considerably.
Nose Plastic Surgery
If you are one of those people who intensely dislike the size or the shape of your nose and you feel that it is making your life unhappy, then it is highly probable that you will, at some stage or another, have seriously considered nose plastic surgery.
