Often patients who have had their nose surgically altered report an upsurge in their self-esteem, as they become happier and more self-confident.
In actual fact, there are three types of corrective nose surgery. Rhinoplasty is the full correction of the nose- the bridge, tip and nostrils. Septorhinoplasty involves the addition of work performed on the septum. Rhinotip is the third kind of surgery which simply concerns adjusting the tip of the nose and the nostrils.

If you feel strongly about the shape or size of your nose, and it is having a detrimental impact on your life, then nose surgery is a genuine option. It might be a sensible idea to discuss the possibility of surgery with your own doctor. Although unable to perform the surgery, your doctor might well be in a position to recommend a good clinic or surgeon and will give you completely independent advice.

When you attend your preliminary consultation with the surgeon of your choice you will talk about your expectations of the surgery, your general medical health and current treatments, and you will also have your face examined and measured, as well as discussing the surgery itself and the kind of anesthesia that will be used during the surgery.
Nose surgery can often be performed as a single day case, but it would be best for you to have a person to take you home after the surgery and also stay with you for your first night. Some clinics prefer patients to stay overnight, especially after full rhinoplasty or septorhinoplasty. The procedure normally takes place under a general anesthetic although intravenous sedation is also possible.

During the operation itself, the surgeon will make cuts inside the nostrils to be able to reach the bone and cartilage, and thus reshape the nose. Sometimes additional bone might be needed to help augment the nose and this will generally be taken from a hip, a rib, the back of an elbow or even the top of the skull. Any necessary cartilage will usually be taken from your ears or from inside the nose itself.

After the operation you will need painkillers to relieve the discomfort when the effects of the anesthetic begin to wear off. Additionally, you will have dressings in each of your nostrils to stop you breathing through your nose and a splint placed over it to hold the newly shaped bones in their position. You might expect to have some bleeding for a few days and some bruising and swelling around the eyes, which could persist for as long as three weeks. It will probably a week before you can return to work. Your surgeon will also advise you about other necessary after-care treatment. Apart from the expected post-surgery discomfort and the anticipated after effects previously mentioned, there should not be further side effects. If you do feel that something untoward is happening, then you should contact your clinic or surgery as soon as possible.

In Britain, prices for nose surgery generally fall between £3,250 and £4,000 and in the USA last year the average cost was $3332.
For the great majority of people, nose surgery brings far greater benefits - in the form of improved appearance and enhanced self-esteem - than any temporary discomforts.
