The objective of the procedure is to create a natural looking, toned and sensitive vagina by tightening both the vaginal muscles and the surrounding soft tissues. Women requesting this surgery tend to be either middle-aged and unhappy about their vaginal appearance because of ageing or childbirth or perhaps women wanting their vaginal muscles tightened for increased sensitivity for themselves and their partners during sexual activities. Many women state that their motive for vaginal tightening surgery is to restore their vagina to how it was before they became pregnant and this is, in most instances, a realistic possibility.
It is quite common for women have other cosmetic procedures performed on the vagina at the same time – such as labia reduction, the clitoris unhooded or fat removed from the external fatty pad above the vagina, the Mons Pubis. This can all be discussed with your surgeon at the all-important preliminary consultation, where you can discover everything you need to know and your surgeon can learn about your medical background.
Vaginal tightening is a specialist but completely standard gynecological surgery, technically known as either vaginoplasty or Posterior Vaginal Repair, and typically takes place under general anesthetic but is also possible under a local anesthetic. Normally, it takes about an hour to complete. The surgeon will shorten the muscle at the back of the vagina and remove any surplus skin. This will have the effect of tightening the muscle and surrounding soft tissues. Any incisions and, therefore, scarring will be inside the vagina itself and so not outwardly visible. Increasingly, surgeons are using laser surgery for this procedure.
You can expect to stay in the hospital for twenty four hours after your surgery and can expect to be sore and a little swollen on your recovery. Although most patients report feeling ‘tight and uncomfortable’ rather than in actual pain, it is possible to take painkillers if necessary. You should be able to walk around quite comfortably after just a few days, although you must be meticulously careful to avoid any activity that is likely to put your wound under any strain. You will be advised about hygiene procedures and general post-surgical care before you leave the clinic.
Recovery is generally quite quick and you should be able to return to work after about one week, although you must be careful about lifting objects, to avoid putting strain on the wound. You should abstain from sex and using tampons for about six weeks.
Because vaginal tightening surgery is a standard procedure, complications are very unusual but, as with all operations, it is possible to suffer from a reaction to the anesthetic, an infection or bleeding and hematoma. More specific side effects of the operation are extremely uncommon but patients have experienced scarring, loss of sensation in the vagina and problems with urine retention. By far the most common side effect of a vaginoplasty, though, is a rejuvenated woman who has a more toned and sensitive vagina within two or three weeks of the surgery.
In the USA, vaginal tightening surgery can cost anything from between $3,500 and $12,000. In the United Kingdom, most clinics will charge between £3,250 and £4,300.
